Michael Broyles (CEO)

If I asked Michael what he thought of the title 'CEO', he would probably say it was nothing more than a fancy title for a candle maker, but don't let that fool you - not only is he a great candle-maker, but he is also a very savvy business man.

Michael and his wife Rachel met over 17 years ago while he was working as a manager at Home Depot. During that time, they managed to get married and have 7 children, Brandon (16), Nathan (15), Brittany (14), Zachary (13), Quentin (12), Courtney (10), and Jonathan (9).

While working as a manager for a regional craft store, Michael was putting in many long hours, nights and weekends and started looking for a way to make a living without missing out on his family. The craft store sold items to make candles from parafin wax. The first candle he made was horrible and wouldn't even burn, however, with more practice and experimenting, he was able to make quality candles that he sold to friends, family, neighbors, and craft shows until he had two different 'potential customers' that he lost because they only bought soy candles.

After much research on Soy candles, he was able to see many advantages to soy wax from low soot, renewable resource grown by American farmers, and longer burning. During this same time, the children started bringing home fundraiser packets for overpriced, imported junk candles. Around the same time, Michael and his wife found out that their second oldest son Nathan, who was 9 at the time, had Type 1 diabetes. It was then that they decided to make this a full time business. Being a savvy business man, he started putting together fundraisers with high quality, affordable, clean burning soy candles and has since dealt with 10's of thousands of fundraisers.

Have you every really given yourself permission to be successful?

One of my spiritual mentoring clients was feeling "stuck" in her life recently, unable to create the success she very much wants to experience.

We talked about how most of us are more afraid of success than failure.

Do you know that?

Most people are more afraid of success than failure because there are implications and consquences for creating success and wealth that intimidates us so much that we sabotage our own success.

Isn't that interesting?

I suggested some affirmations for her to write and repeat and talked about a few things she can do create what she wants in her life.

Then the biggest inspiration of all came to me and I said to her...

"You need to give yourself Permission to be successful."

And then I told her also that "I give you permission to be successful."

That made us both laugh, but it helped. If there are those in your life who have not given you permission to be successful, then you can give yourself permission.

How many of us feel we do not have permission to be successful?

How many of us sabotage our own success because we feel we do not deserve it?

Who told us that?

Where did we learn it?

Could it be the thousands of times we were told "no" as children and into our adult lives.

Could it be all the employers who paid us what THEY thought we were worth and convinced us that we cannot do better?

I realized as I was telling my client to give herself permission to be successful that I too can give myself complete permission to be successful.

Daily Affirmation: "I give myself permission to be successful now."

My client's question was also a gift to ME. So, I am now adding this affirmation to My daily list of Affirmations.

Repeat this Affirmation 400 times a day and see what happens. Yes, 400 times is what Mark Victor Hansen of Chicken Soup For The Soul suggests. So I say follow and repeat what works. If you want to be successful, do what the successful do. Mark Victor Hansen is successful.

Building an Inventory on a Shoestring Budget, by Kristine Carpenter

I've had several requests from distributors for this article that I had posted in someone elses thread a while back in reply to a question that they had. Since there were so many requests, I decided to re-post again, in it's own thread to help others who might have missed it. Here it is:

Hi Everyone,

This article will teach you how you can build an inventory up for your home based business on a shoestring budget, without taking much out of your OWN pocket at all to do. How can this be possible you ask? Read on...

This article is geared more toward my home based candle business as an example, but the technique could be applied to other home based businesses as well. I hope you enjoy it.

While inventory is certainly not required in our business, I like to carry some and so do many of my team members. The simple and effective "Smell & Sell" technique is very effective... as simple as taking the lid of a jar, letting someone smell some of the scents that you have, and selling on the spot. They move really well like that. Also, by having it, I'm ready for any opportunity that may present itself, even with limited time notice.

So... How can I build an inventory with very little out of pocket???

Here is how you can build up an inventory, AND get a fast start pack without spending much out of pocket to do so. Lets start this REALLY small... say you got a 3 jar order, the sale of 3 jars sold at $20 each (I charge a little more per jar than the $18.95 MSRP, I charge $20 flat rate and say shipping, ect... is included in the price (rather than selling for the $18.95 and then adding shipping ect... I'm all for keeping it simple. Some of my team members sell successfully at $25 each jar candle in their area, but I personally charge $20, so I will use $20 as the price in my example). Anyway... a 3 jar sale at $20 each is enough to have ordered 6 jars at the distributor price of $9.95 each (you would have to kick in a small amount to cover the shipping and tax on the 6 jars but then you would have had 3 jars to smell and sell with.

When you sell those 3 "Smell and Sell" jars, then you take that money that you collect from those 3 "Smell and Sell" sales and order 6 jars to smell and sell with (you order your "Smell and Sell Jars in TOP selling scents, there is always a list of the top selling scents for this time of year at the end of every newsletter. TOP selling scents are always easy to sell with the simple "Smell & Sell" method).

So... then you have 6 jars to smell and sell with (you won't beleive how easy these jars are to sell when you have them on hand to smell and sell. Now, when you sell those 6 jar candles at $20 each, you'll have about enough to order a dozen jars to "Smell and Sell with), when you sell those 12 smell and sell jars, you'll have collected about enough to order 2 dozen jars to smell and sell with, and so on.

What I did, was to keep reinvesting my profits into building stock until I had the amount of stock that I wanted carry, like I explained above. For me, the amount of stock that I wanted to always have on hand was 3 dozen jars. You may want one or 2 dozen, it's up to you, but for me 3 dozen is working well. There are certain scents that I like to have 3 of on hand of because they are fast sellers (Hot Apple Pie, SO&CP, French Vanilla). "Sex on the Beach" is another top seller for me, but since I work in a bar 2 days per month and bring my candles with me that could have something to do with that, LOL. Anyway, when you choose scents from the TOP sellers list, and tell people that you carry the top selling scents in stock, and here's what you have that they can take right away, or you can order any scent that they want, and you will be placing your next order (give yourself about a week, so that you can collect more "smell and sell money" to invest in the 6 jar order to fulfill that request, or get more orders to put in with it)... they will most often choose one of those top sellers that you have right there, but that's what you do if they choose one that you don't have there. You're safe to be able to sell the TOP sellers, when you choose your "Smell and Sell" jars from the TOP sellers list because those scents sell really well quickly as long as you're sharing them with people ("Smell and Sell").

Once I had reinvested my profits so that I could build the 3 dozen inventory that I wanted (for me this happened quickly. I had gone into businesses for corporate gift giving and got a LARGE corporate gift order and reinvested my profit into a bigger inventory, but you could build it up slower just as I described above if you wanted... it works on the same exact idea and is working for others who couldn't afford to be out of pocket a lot to just buy it, but by reinvesting and building it up that way they get a nice inventory to be ready for a party quickly, or any opportunity that may come their way without being out of pocket much to have built up that inventory.

I was one of those who couldn't afford to buy the fast start pack right away. I wished SO BADLY that I could!! My boyfriend and I handle our finances seperately, and the money just was NOT in my account. As much as I wanted to start with the fast start (and DEFINITELY would have if the money was in my account, I just couldn't. I wanted it so bad that it was like a hunger that I needed to get it, so I was very focused. It meant, focus, and hard work to get my bag (fast start pack) FAST! Once I got my inventory built up (which happened quickly for me because I was showing the products to everyone, taking orders, and got BIG orders from businesses too), I then focused on maintaining my 3 dozen, and putting my profit aside so that I could invest it into a Fast Start Pack.

So every time I sold a dozen (collected $240), and bought my replacement dozen to maintain my inventory level, I put what was left aside (seperate from the rest of my money)... this became the "Fast Start Pack Fund", LOL. I wanted that sample bag, and it makes the most sense to buy it as part of the fast start pack because for the extra $200 above the cost of just the bag alone you get ALL that product. The Fast Start Pack is valued at over $850 because it includes a TON of product! I knew that when I sell the product in the Fast Start Pack, that I would get MORE than my full investment back, virtually making that awesome $200 sample bag FREE and then money in my pocket besides, so it made a lot more sense to me to get my sample bag as part of the Fast Start Pack.

Once I had completed getting my inventory built, then my I acheived my 2nd goal of getting my Fast Start Bag, then all that was needed to do is to maintain my inventory level that I personally like to carry. I like 3 dozen jars in stock, like I said.... so when I sell a dozen ($20 each x12= $240 collected), I just buy a dozen to maintain my 3 dozen stock at my discounted distributor price of $9.50/jar, and can pocket the rest as my profit. :)This is how you build on a tight budget. For those who can start with the Fast Start Pack WITHOUT falling behind on your bills, I HIGHLY recommend it. You will reach your income goals so much quicker and easier, having products on hand to "Smell and Sell" with right from the start, and I can't even tell you how many sales that my sample bag has been responsible for. It's definitely worth it's weight in gold!

For those, like me... that starting with a Fast Start Pack is just impossible for, this is a realistic plan to accomplish it, without much out of pocket. It's just reinvesting the profit for a while in the beginning to build your business up and then your profits will come later once you've worked through this part.

I did it, and you can too!

The example here is specific to my business but can be applied to other businesses too. Help with Fundraising

I know a lot of you are going through some difficult times with going out to talk to schools/groups about fund raising. I found an excellent way to get your information out to the intended targets without stepping outside your door.Whether it's the weather keeping you indoors or you are too scared, shy, or uncomfortable to make that first face to face contact, you can call first.

I have been calling the schools in my area and getting the contact info for the person in charge of fund-raising. Once you get that info, email off a short letter and attach a couple of the fund raiser info sheets from the Fund Raiser Guide.

I've gotten 3 people that are lining up fund raisers for their schools...two of which are in the same school but different groups. One of them happens to be a fund raiser organizer for another school's soccer team. When you talk to them, make sure the excitement in your voice is loud and clear. It will rub off on them and will love to have a fund raiser with our wonderful Mia Bella products.

Also, make sure you not only offer the jar candles. I would do the candles and the Bella Buns or the simmer pots and the melts...this way the customers have a higher price item and a lower price item to choose from. Price points and choices are very important during this economy and can make the difference between a great fund raiser and a mediocre attempt at a fund raiser.

Remember, ladies, we are in this to make money...not for charity. If you want more info...shoot me an email and I'll give you the little intro talk I give them over the phone. I have many things keeping me busy and can't always get out to talk to the school's staff in person so this is the next best thing.

Especially for you guys up there where the "north winds blow" and it's too darn cold to go anywhere. Of course, once they decide to do the fund raiser with your products, you go in person and give them the fund raiser packets (and samples) as needed.

The "Lending Method"..

Contact a local business and ask them if they would be willing to demostrate a new scent. Then "lend" them a candle for a few days. If they like the candle they can buy it, if they take orders totally $200 or more they can keep the candle for free. If after two days they don't want to buy the candle, move on to the next business, leave a catalog and some order sheets with the candle.

Best Places with alot of traffic: hair salons, nail salons, tanning salons and offices also work well... Make sure they are allowed to burn a candle, if not try to use a simmer pot with melts. Get orders of any kind of $200 or more they can keep the simmer pot and get a bag of melts..

What OUR Candles are made of...

Our original formula was 100% soy but we found that soy was NOT the best ingredient to develop an alternative candle from. The reason is that 100% soy does NOT hold enough scent to create a strong scented candle. When we designed a strongly scented soy candle we found that scent actually rose to the top of the candle forming a puddle at the top. The proprietary formula we currently use is a formula specifically designed for our candle's needs (clean burning and also strongly scented) and is comprised of renewable palm waxes. In our opinion, although soy has the benefits of clean burning and warm water clean up, our blend has those benefits PLUS allows us to make the candle one of the strongest scented candles in the market!

And that is only the tip of the iceberg. That is just what I read in today's headlines alone and we all know everyday we read more and more just like this.

It's sad and scary.

It's also a HUGE point for home businesses /mlm/network marketing.
Though to tell you the truth, I just read on the party plan folder that 2 more (home based) companies are shutting down as we speak. That's also a strong reason for having more than one home based business, as some of us do. Some people say they can't run more than one, but in my opinion, it can be almost necessary to support our families.

As far as our fabulous company, Charlie always reminds us that our company is DEBT-FREE and growing each and every year! They have high goals for growth and though they may be reached slower than anticipated due to the economy, the great thing is that we are still growing strong.

People NEED a home business like ours with a feel-good product we all use year round. Tell me who's night is made a little cozier and homier and warmer with a scented candle burning? Makes us all feel better and happier, for sure. Not to mention, our candles are made in America.

Action means doing something to move your business forward each day.
These can be small, meaning not a long list or super time intensive...
Here is a example of some action steps to take daily......

Pass out your business card to two people each day!
Make 2 new friends on Myspace, or another social networking site.
Call Two Leads who have responded to an ad for home business.
Drop off a candle to demo to 2 of your closest friends and ask for business referrals.

Belief is the next one. How do you know that the sun will come up tomorrow,
that the seasons will change? We have no real proof except that it has happened before, so it should happen again, right? This is belief and it plays an important part of your success.

How to you make yourself believe that you will be successful, especially if things have been rocky? Who do you know who has already had the kind of success you are seeking? What is it about this person or these people that makes it work for them? What steps do they take each day? Are these steps that you could also take?

If you know that other have been successful in the same company, then you must believe that if you follow in their footsteps you will be, too. Belief is powerful and a necessary part of your business..

How well will any business do if it is only open an hour or two a month? What if those two hours consist of reading email; checking into the back office to see how many hits the website has received; and wondering why no business is coming in?

The key piece of Consistency is taking Action, based on Belief. No one has ever failed who has pursed this avenue of business success. So as other businesses and competitors close their doors, do you see this as a trend you should follow, or opportunity to increase your market share?

Simple Votive Drawing Box..

From a Distributor here in Idaho!!!

Simple Votive Drawing Box!
1. Open a votive box and pull out the crate for the candles.
2. Turn it over, (the crate will now be the bottom of the box.) Cut a piece of paper or cardboard the size fo the crate and glue it on the inside of the box to cover the hole on the crate.)
3. Tape the flap of the box to the crate to complete the front of the box.
4. Tape the sides where there is still a small opening.
5. Cut a slit in the top of the box above the Print for the entry forms.
6. Add your "free drawing" and "enter here" signs to the box along with your business card.
7. Tie a pen on a string or ribbon and tap to the box where you want it.

This is a great way to use up your votive boxes. I gave a free votive to one winner every week! This way the drawing box displays the candle I am giving away!

It's working well for me and I thought it might for others as well!

How to Make Candles Last Longer~~~

1) Store the candles in a cool, dry dark place. Keep candles out of sunlight or other places where they may heat up such as by a stove. This will keep them from melting unintentionally. Store tapered or dinner candles flat to help prevent them from warping so that you can use them longer.

2) Trim the candles wick to 1/4" before burning the candle. This will help produce the ideal flame that will burn your candle the most efficiently. The flame should have a steady tear-drop shape and it shouldn't flicker or smoke erratically. Blow it out, let it cool and trim the wick if the flame gets out of control.

3) Place your candles in your freezer before burning them. This is a short term solution, because the candles will heat up quickly. This is a good way to slow the burn on candles you use for dinner light or other short applications. Wrap the candle in foil to keep the wick from getting moist.

4) Keep candles away from drafty areas. Drafts can cause candles to burn unevenly which will affect the life of your candle.

5) Put scented candles that do not have a jar into sealed containers to help retain the fragrance.

6) Buy a candle warmer and place your candles on it instead of burning them. This is good for scented jar candles so that you can enjoy the fragrance without the smoke and the candle will last longer.

Remember number 6 our candles are not recommended to put on a candle warmer..

I started selling Mia Bella a little over a year ago and business has been kind of slow, I just did my first craft show on November 1st and while I didn't make much in the way of money (frankly no body I talked to really did either), I got about 10 entries in my candle drawing box. The woman who won the drawing booked a catalog party with me and is also looking into becoming a distributor herself. I currently have 2 catalog parties running, just did a home party this past Friday, have another one booked for December 5th with
another craft show booked for December 6th. Whoever said the economy was bad obviously doesn't sell our candles!
